Guests resting outside in colourful chairs, talking in a circle

Visit Kotisauna · What to expect at our community sauna

Your first visit, start to finish.

Ninety minutes, hosted from the first round to the last. Everything you need to know is on this page.

How a visit works

Your 90 minutes.

Start low on the bench. Heat rises, and the top is the hottest seat in the room.

  1. 01 · Arrive early

Come ten minutes before your session. We start together, so being on time is part of the ritual, and a kindness to everyone else. Change, and leave your phone in a locker.

  2. 02 · Start together

Meet your hosts at the sauna door. They'll show you the room, the löyly and how we pour for each other. Then we go in as one group.

  3. 03 · Your rounds

Ten to fifteen minutes of heat. One to three minutes under a cold shower. Ten to fifteen minutes of rest outside. Most people do three rounds. Nobody's watching the clock.

  4. 04 · Finish together

We close the way we opened, as a group. Ask your hosts about the tonttu, the sauna's guardian spirit.

  • Two towels of your own: one for the bench, one for after
  • Sandals or flip-flops
  • A water bottle

Washrooms are in the main Evergreen building, a short walk away. Go before your session.

How we share the space

Everyone looks after the room, and each other.

Not rules. Small habits that make the room worth coming back to.

Phone in a locker.

The bench is one of the last places nothing is expected of you. Nobody's filming, so everyone can be present.

Rinse first.

A quick shower before your first round is a courtesy to everyone on the bench.

Sit on your towel.

It's for the next person, and it keeps the wood good for years.

Ask before you pour.

Anyone can pour water on the stones. Ask the room first: "Löyly?" That one word is the whole culture.

Make room.

Shift over. Keep the door quick so the heat stays in.

Hold the room gently.

Talk if the room is talking. Silence is just as welcome. Keep it low.

Come back.

First visit, you learn the room. Second, it starts to feel like home. Third, you're part of it.

Rooted in Finnish tradition, with respect for every culture that gathers around heat, cold and rest.

I've never done sauna. Is this for me?

Yes. Most guests are new to it or coming back after years away. Our hosts walk you through everything.

Can I come alone?

Absolutely. Plenty of people do. You won't be alone for long.

What do I wear?

A swimsuit, the whole time. Bring your own towels: one to sit on, one for after.

How hot is it?

Properly hot. The top bench is hottest, so start low and move up when you're ready.

What if it's too much?

Step out whenever you want. There's no right amount of time. If you feel dizzy or unwell, leave the heat and tell a host.

Do I have to do the cold shower?

No. But try a short one. It's part of the cycle, and most people say it's the best part.

Are you open in winter?

All winter, Thursday to Monday. Resting outside in the cold air is half the point, so bring a robe and a toque. The platforms are heated to cut down on ice, but take your time underfoot.

Should I check with my doctor first?

If you have any health condition or concern, yes. The heat is real, and your body will feel it.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes, from age 12, with a parent or guardian who stays for the whole visit. The parent or guardian signs a short paper form on site, as well as their own waiver. Wondering if sauna is right for your kids? Read Can kids go in the sauna?

Can I bring my phone?

Into a locker, yes. Not into the sauna. No photos of other guests without their OK.

What if I'm late, or need to cancel?

We start together, so arrive ten minutes early. Late arrivals still finish at the scheduled time. Cancel up to 12 hours before for a full refund. If we cancel for weather, you get a credit. Full details are in our Terms.

Is it accessible?

The site has gravel paths and natural surfaces. Email sweat@kotisauna.ca before you book and we'll talk it through.

Can we book the whole sauna?

Yes. Private group sessions are $300 for up to 16 people, hosted start to finish. Email us to book. Teams and companies, see Groups.
