Community sauna at Evergreen Brick Works, Toronto

No before. No after. Just now.

Sauna culture is counter-culture. Heat, cold water, rest and the people beside you.

Some saunas perform. Ours just works.

Everything we left out, we left out on purpose. Skipping the frills keeps the price within reach, so sauna can be part of your week, not a special occasion.

No cold plunge.

Cold showers instead, as in Finland: easier, cheaper and safer. Not cold enough? Nobody has ever said that in February.

No phones.

The room is for the people in it. Nobody's filming, so nobody feels watched, first-timers included.

No script.

Hosts guide the culture. Everyone here looks after the space, and each other.

No tiles, no mirrors.

Nothing to check yourself in, and nothing fancy to pay for.

No spa menu.

No treatments, upgrades or tiers. One price, the same heat for everyone.

No goals to hit.

Nothing to track, nothing to master. Just come back next week.

The ritual

Heat. Cold. Rest. Repeat.

That's the whole thing. Centuries old, and still just sitting down together.

  1. Water poured from a ladle onto the hot stones
    01 · Heat

Water on the stones makes löyly, the steam that rolls over the bench.

  2. A guest under the outdoor cold shower
    02 · Cold

A cold shower. Over before you argue with it.

  3. Guests resting in colourful chairs, talking in a circle
    03 · Rest

Sit out in the cold air. This is where strangers start talking.

  4. Two guests laughing together on the bench
    04 · Repeat

Go again. Once is a visit. Every week is a ritual.

First time?

Swimsuit. Towel. Water. You're ready.

Already know this?

Every culture has a bathhouse. This one is yours too.
